The first number in a binocular specification such as 8 × 42 is magnification. The second is the objective lens diameter in millimeters. More magnification is not automatically a better choice.
Balance reach and usability
Higher magnification generally makes hand movement more noticeable and can narrow the field of view. A wider view can make it easier to locate and follow a moving subject. Check each model’s actual field-of-view specification rather than comparing magnification alone.
Consider the whole binocular
Compare weight, eye relief, close-focus distance and whether you will use a support. Exit pupil is objective diameter divided by magnification: an 8 × 42 has an exit pupil of about 5.25 mm. This measurement is one consideration, not a substitute for optical quality and a comfortable fit.
